Have you ever wondered who you have to thank for all the sexual freedoms you are afforded? Pioneers, both women and men, have worked hard to make sexual freedom possible. Here we will celebrate them and their achievements:

Since the 1950s and before, girls who had premarital sex were considered bad girls who would end up as single mothers or in need of clandestine abortion. The only contraceptive device was a condom, and most of them were made of sheepskin, which was porous and prone to breaking.

In the early sixties, girls were still thought of as sluts if they slept with you, but Playboy was putting out its first issue, which endorsed a free sexual lifestyle for men. By the mid 1960s, the thinking and the times had progressed along with the fads and the media and marketing gurus began to cater to the free thought and defiant establishment of the youth of the day. Women were burning their arms, and use of the pill, which came on the market in the 1960s, was in full swing.

Founded in 1966, the National Organization for Women was founded and fights to achieve equality for women in the workplace, guarantee reproductive rights, including abortion and contraception, fights for the rights of women as victims of crime and rape, and advocates an end to racism. It was the same year that Masters and Johnson made a study on orgasms available to the public. The sexual revolution was in full swing. There is still plenty of anti-women going on today, and still across the board, but while the women’s sexual revolution was taking place, the rest of the country was also experiencing a new sexual freedom.

Nearly a year after the Stonewall riots, the Gay Liberation Front received recognition as a student organization in April 1970. The Alliance of Gay Activists demonstrated against discrimination, and “A Gay Manifesto” is distributed and hailed as the movement bible.

In October 1972 John Lunning wins the first Mr. Gold Coast title. Leather clubs opened a couple of years earlier were popular and crowded, and the leather and bondage communities started coming out of the basement and playing. As the police continue to raid some of the public bars and clubs, private sex-positive clubs have started to spring up. They charge an annual membership fee and have private parties, available to the public by invitation only. The one in my city is clean, friendly and very professional. They care about the health and safety of all members and hold weekly workshops to answer any questions newbies may have.

So the next time you tie up your partner or visit your favorite sex-positive club, remember the people who came before you and continue to get involved with your local chapter of sex-positive activists.
