Personal trainers agree that more than half of the population is overweight or obese and this figure has increased in the last four decades. If you are overweight, the effects will be all too visible. Typically, you’ll have a protruding gut, a double chin, and if you let things go idly, another important part of your body will take a hit: your heart.

It is a well known fact that physical inactivity and being overweight can lead to heart disease. People who are physically inactive and overweight are twice as likely to have a heart attack as people who engage in regular physical activity.

Fortunately for us, there’s no big mystery to losing weight: You just need to get rid of more calories than you consume. The healthiest way is to burn some of them through exercise and eliminate the rest from your diet.

By doing this, you could lose ten pounds by the end of this month if you burn five hundred calories through exercise and cut another five hundred from your daily diet. But you may not even need to lose that much.

According to a personal trainer, if you really want to lose weight, you need to know the facts and figures about your own body. You can’t just pick a number of pounds to lose out of thin air for this month. You need to have a realistic and healthy goal to achieve.

To do this, you will need to know what your Body Mass Index (BMI) is. The BMI tells you how much excess fat you have on your body and therefore provides an indication of how much weight you need to lose.

It is essential that you reach your ideal body mass index through exercise and diet. But not only through diet. Normally, when you reduce the amount of food, about 75 percent of the weight loss is fat and 25 percent is muscle.

This is not good if you are trying to get bigger muscles in other areas of your body. However, when you burn calories through exercise, your fat weight loss will be closer to 100 percent. It will also offset the hormonal changes that occur when you cut back on your food.

Other benefits include helping your body oxidize fat better while protecting lean muscle tissue, especially if you exercise first thing in the morning before breakfast, your body will lose even more fat.
