The Benefits of Getting a Teen Job

Getting a job as a teenager is very difficult and it is becoming increasingly difficult with the economy in decline. That being said, you should try really hard to get teen jobs because the payoffs are tremendous. Aside from the obvious benefit of making money and having money to spend, there are dozens of other benefits to teens getting a job. I remember when I turned 16 I couldn’t wait to get a job and start earning my own money. Here are the things I learned and what you can learn if you take the plunge and get a job.

When you get a job, you are learning to be responsible and this will help you in college and as an adult. You will learn to be on time and you will learn to keep your commitments. This will help you understand the responsibilities your parents have and teach you the valuable lesson that you have to work hard to earn money. Of course, most people would prefer to sleep in late, but if you set that pattern for yourself as a teenager, it can be difficult to break it as an adult. Believe it or not, I think delivering newspapers very early in the morning (4:00 am) when I was 13 and 14 helped shape my work ethic and taught me to be responsible. The lesson I learned is that we all have to do things that we may not like. What I did like though was being able to buy my own car when I turned 16 with the money I had saved.

Another skill I learned is to communicate with all kinds of people. When I was 16 years old, I worked as a camp counselor. I had to communicate with the children, my peers, my bosses and the children’s parents as well. This certainly helped me in my early career as a teacher and can help you in whatever career you choose.

Another benefit I got was experience and each job led to the next. For example, when I was applying for my position at the camp, they were impressed that I delivered newspapers. When I applied to be a teacher, they were impressed that I had more than 4 years of experience with children. My point is that you have to start somewhere and it makes sense to start as early as possible.

Finally, teen jobs are very important to developing skills for the future. My first work experiences helped enormously later in my career and I think it will help you too.
