The human mind loves to complicate things. A person is judged on their ability to perform complex tasks. “One” is too simple, too mundane, and perhaps even too insulting to suggest to a person who enjoys his accomplishments.

However, the reptilian brain, “the Reticular Activation System – RAS”, the seat of emotions, is put off by complexity. He loves small tasks, “one” at a time, “one” little by little. Too many tasks overwhelm you. If you ask the “RAS”, how do you eat an elephant? You would probably answer “a little bit at a time”.

Enough of theory. How would you put it into practice? Imagine a sink full of dirty dishes that you have to wash, a task that many hate. Now, seeing that huge pile of plates can seem overwhelming. It is not a problem at all. Take a plate, wash it, and put it away. Then do something else. What? You may think this guy is crazy. Works!

If you have nothing to do, sit down and watch five minutes of TV, go back and make the next dish, maybe one more for good luck. In any case, the sitcoms keep repeating themselves; you wouldn’t miss much.

You may have to fill out some tax return forms or some other project to complete. This method would work well in a home office or somewhere where it is not supervised. Keep two “paperwork” tasks side by side and get creative. Complete one now, set it aside, and then move on to the other task. The brain loves to change clothes: different clothes, different cuisine, different cars, different “anything”. When you involve him in two different “unique tasks”, it keeps him interested. Works.

I didn’t say do two things at the same time. Finish one “one task”, move on to the next one “one task”, come back, repeat. Finally, if you get bored, close both tasks and come back to them later. There’s a greater chance that you will eventually complete these tasks by attacking them multiple times “one task” and wondering, how the heck did I complete these tasks that I had been putting off for so long?

Well the simple answer is that by keeping it very simple, you ended up showing up on your assignment repeatedly, and when you “showed up”, you did that “one thing”, time passed and the work got done. He did not procrastinate.

Procrastination occurs if a task is perceived as painful, difficult, long-lasting, or the results seem overwhelming and uncertain. You don’t need to know how the job will be completed, just repeatedly introduce yourself and act on it by taking small steps, maybe even that “one step.”

If it’s really boring, mix it up with some exciting music or activity and repeat “one step” several times. No more excuses, please. It can’t get easier than this.

If you do nothing, in any case, life will pass you by. Would the next five years look the same as the previous five? You have the opportunity to choose. The quality of your life is the result of the decisions you make and the direction you take. Choose wisely … Choose the right direction.
