i know dogs

I have interviewed dogs that jump on people whether they like it or not. Most people get upset with the excess and admonish, kick, or shame the animal. There are better ways to train this annoying habit to get better.

As a dog, I can’t help but get excited when my owner returns to the office. I hear the key click in the lock and the door creak. Somehow I know that he is the editor and not a thief… the editor smells funny.

I would suggest training your dog not to jump with the following ideas:

1. Tie your dog on a six-foot leash to a doorknob or sofa and approach him in a relaxed manner. If his front paws remain on the ground, pet him and praise him or give him a treat. If his paws come off the ground, turn your back on him and say “sorry.” Take five steps back.

Repeat this until his paws remain on the ground when you approach.

2. Once he has accepted this first step, go up to him and praise him.

If he jumps from that close, just turn, turn your back and say “sorry” again until he gets the message. It may take from one to twenty times for you to realize the importance of ‘I’m sorry’. Don’t be discouraged.

You remember when you were a child; it took a lot of iteration to seal the message. Most dogs, however, are above average and they catch on quickly.

3. Approach gradually from more than fifteen years away and use a squeaky or high-pitched voice as you approach him.

Initially, you will get excited and dance and then you will realize that the same rules apply. She repeats in different rooms so that she realizes that she is in the house with a silly but adorable owner.

4. What about the guests?

Re-leash your dog before guests arrive, and if they’re up for it, ask them to practice those initial steps.

If they’re unwilling, keep your dog on a leash until the excitement subsides and then unleash him, but hold onto the leash to prevent him from jumping at your guests.

(If the guests let you jump on them, hit them with a rolled up newspaper.)

Remember:

1. Tie down.

2. Praise

3.Reward
