Let’s face it, your home decor isn’t complete until you’ve put something on the windows, and Roman blinds are a great way to get a finished yet casual look in any room. Roman blinds can be hung on your windows on their own or used in conjunction with balances, shades or drapes for a great layered look.

Hanging roman blinds is quite simple. They are hung on the inside of the window frame, so they need a tension rod or a rod that screws into the window opening. The blinds simply slide over the bar on the rod hung inside the window. If you’re hanging Roman blinds in your home, you want to make sure you position the rod near the top of the window, and then the same distance from the top frame on all windows.

Roman blinds come in virtually any material color you want. Bamboo is a popular material, especially for tropical beach houses, but Roman blinds can also be made in cotton and polyester fabrics.

Making Roman blinds is an option if you can’t find the ones that suit your needs. They’re pretty easy to make – just go to the store and examine these manufactured Roman Shades and you’ll see that they basically consist of three or more “pockets” that usually hold some sort of rigid piece like a small board. These “pockets” are what I used to lift the shadows up so that the shadows end up with a layered look when drawn. When they are hanging in the windows they just appear to be a flat panel.

To make the roman blinds go up correctly you need to attach the strings on each side and thread them through the rigid pieces of material inside each pocket. That way, when you pull the strings, the blinds will fold one “pocket” under the other.

If you don’t feel like making roman shades yourself is an option, you can easily embellish the ones you find in the store to give them a more unique and interesting touch. just buy a flat screen in a color that’s complementary to your decor. You may want to select a color that is in the fabric of your sofa, or if you are in a bedroom, choose the shades to be a secondary color of your bedding or shower curtain. Then with some embellishments like ribbons, dangling pom poms, fringe, and whatever else you see that catches your eye.

To add the trims to your roman shades you can make it easier by purchasing a hot glue gun and you can simply stick whatever you like anywhere on the shade. Usually, people embellish shadows by adding extra ribbons or fringe at the bottom, but you don’t have to limit yourself to this – let your imagination run wild!

If you find that your Roman window shades look a little beer on your windows, then you might try adding a valance at the top of the window. You can choose quantities of the same color as the roman shade or you can choose a patent shade with a patent match being one of the colors in your plain roman shade. If you’re going for a really formal look, you can even add curtains to the sides of the windows.

Hanging roman blinds on your windows is not only an easy task, but it can also add a professional look to your decor.
