Most new construction today, as well as remodeled homes, now feature undermount stainless steel kitchen sinks. Because they are recessed, there is no rim on the sink and it sits flush with the counter. The ideal countertop for the undermount sink is granite or marble due to its resistance. However, if your countertop is not granite or marble, ask if the material it is made of is suitable for installing the undermount sink.

Due to their difficulty in installation, stainless steel undermount sinks are not really for the DIYer to install. If the homeowner has some knowledge of plumbing then he may want to try installing the sink himself, but if he does not have the knowledge then it should be installed by a professional. This applies whether you choose a double sink or a single sink. If you are going to install it yourself and have some plumbing knowledge, choose the single sink. The double bowl sink would be very difficult to repair if the need arose.

There are many reasons why stainless steel undermount sinks are so popular today. There is little maintenance because the sink is made from a single sheet of steel. The bowl is recessed so that crumbs on the counter can be swept directly into the sink and there is no need to pick them off the edge of the sink. Other materials that sinks are made of tend to crack and harbor bacteria. The fact that stainless steel does not harbor bacteria is an advantage for a more hygienic kitchen. Undermount stainless steel kitchen sinks fit into any decor and help create a more contemporary kitchen.

To install the undermount sink, a hole must be cut in the countertop to fit it. Since the stainless steel undermount sink is installed below the edge of the countertop, the countertop must be solid. Because the undermount sink is stainless steel and lightweight, there’s no fear of it tipping over when full.
