Are you aware that pet abandonment is higher in the hot summer months than in any other part of the year?
Families going on vacation to the coast or mountains with children pick up a puppy for the children’s enjoyment and abandon it when they return home. This is the main reason you find more strays after the summer in sections of Long Island, New York, and New Jersey.
Humane organizations have always had enough stray puppies and dogs to find homes for; This work seems endless. Some of the animal shelters advertise or feature a column in the local newspapers with photos and information about the availability of animals with them. Sometimes a good image entices people to give the dog a home. There are others who become infatuated with a particular dog, they adopt it; however, these dogs are not kept for long by the person who adopts them and it is only a matter of time before the dog returns to the shelter.
Some of these dogs are returned to the shelter after a few days with lame excuses like “they aren’t even barking in case any strangers come to the house.” Many people are unaware that the dog must accept the person as owner and must have a sense of belonging. All of this takes time, probably a couple of weeks. Once the dog accepts the relationship, he will start barking to protect the owner’s home and family.
In the event of a neighborhood robbery, people start running to the local SPCA for a guard dog; however, this dog is tied to a six-foot chain all day. The SPCA, before giving the dog up for adoption, visits the home of the person who wants to adopt a dog to find out if he has the appropriate facilities at his residence; only then do they allow the adoption of one of the larger breeds.
Many people think that euthanasia is the worst thing that can happen to a dog; however, when you consider other things that are going on, you will find that this is one of the best ways to put the dog to sleep permanently. Many labs across the country are interested in having animals for experimental purposes. These animals are subjected to various experiments that cause unspeakable agony to these animals. This agony can last for hours, days or weeks. Compared to this, euthanasia is better as it ends life peacefully.
People kidnap dogs in order to sell them to a research lab to cut up and experiment on; this is a constant threat to family pets. There are people who advertise in the local papers that they want to buy your unwanted puppies. These people obtain these puppies to deliver to laboratories. Many of these people also respond to ads: “Free to a good home.”
The SPCA first checks to see if these pups really do get a new home or if they’re likely to land on an experimental table. They allow dogs to be brought home only after making sure it is a genuine place. Under the law in some of the states, SPCA cannot refuse to sell unlicensed/unclaimed dogs after 48 hours and licensed/unclaimed dogs after 10 days to laboratories.
If you want to protect your family’s pets you should make sure these pets don’t get lost and also put identification tags on the dog to make it easier to find them in case they get lost. Dog owners must show the necessary concern and care for their pets to prevent unnecessary suffering, confusion, and unhappiness to man’s best friend.
